TRI-PHASES OF NORDIC-RUSSIAN ARCHITECTURE

Lemara Miftakhova

This project is a school for children of different age-groups. The idea of the design is to integrate indoor/outdoor & hot/cold spaces to educate children about the existing environment. This will be accomplished through the accumulation of snow through an engineered roof system in three different courtyards. Each courtyard creates different microclimate conditions that allow natural deformation of the active permafrost layer, which in turn feeds into the children’s daily activities. The first courtyard is a COLD “Snow playground”: it intends to simply collect and preserve snow. The second courtyard is a COLD - HOT - COLD “Steam playground” which strives to turn snow into a hot water that will then steam in the cold arctic air. The third courtyard is a COLD - WARM - COLD “ice-skating yard”: it aims to melt snow and refreeze it on the ground to form ice.
