CAVES & PLAINS
Ariel Chesley | Summer 2016
How does one build a conference center complex on unstable ground to confront rising water due to climate change?
Venice is a resilient island city that adapts to the drastic change in water levels year after year, where wide open public plazas narrow down to a labyrinth of streets that encourage walking and experiencing the city on foot. Similarly, Caves + Plains focuses on the movement of the individual through this conference center and their living, working and reflecting spaces, from the most public shop on the ground floor to the private balcony space. Through a system of columns and adaptable walkways, the ground will have a constantly changing topography based on the level of the water.
