Located on the island of San Pietro di Castello in Venice, Italy, the goal of this project was to create additional exhibition space for the ever expanding Venice Biennale. While within walking distance of the Biennale grounds, the island of San Pietro is located on the far eastern edge of the city and contains a large cordoned-off area that currently sits vacant in a unique urban wild condition.
Wishing to preserve one of the few remaining sections of green space in a city of brick and stone, the building is elevated on thin pilotis to leave the ground condition untouched. The aim of the design was to create a contrasting spatial sequence extending from the historical core of the island’s church and cloister outwards to the Venetian lagoon.
